Old 3DS top screen is broken, system won't let me transfer data

So I've had a 3DS since launch with absolutely no problems at all until now, when one day after my 3DS was in sleep mode, I open it to see absolutely nothing, so naturally I assume it's dead and plug it in to try to turn it on.

As of now there are two different ways the 3DS turns on, either with an extremely dim lower screen and nothing on the top screen at all, or a normal looking lower screen and a black screen with what looks like an internal crack (I have no clue how this occurred, it definitely wasn't thrown or anything).

So I bought a 3DS XL (the special edition Zelda Link Between Worlds one) and I'm attempting to do a system transfer given that I have a lot of downloaded 3DS titles AND I have all the ambassador games that would be impossible to rebuy on the new system. However the 3DS appears to be unstable, because while I can load it up to the menu, whenever I try to make the system transfer occur, my old 3DS just freezes with a black screen and there's nothing I can do until it completely dies.

Is there any way that I can just have all my e-shop data for downloading the games I've bought on my old system transferred to my new system's e-shop? (not overwriting it hopefully as I've already downloaded Link Between Worlds on the new system). I really hope I don't have to pay $95 just to have the system repaired JUST so I can transfer my old data (I've already copied over the SD card data, that's not a problem).

Please help :/
