Animal Crossing: New Leaf Time Change Help

I got a new New 3Ds XL for my birthday on April 1st and i had set the date perfect.  And started animal crossing. I have all the villagers that i like and i want to keep them. Well my ds battery died completely and my animal crossing date is perfect but my ds says 2014 instead of 2015. Is there any way to change my ds date without affecting animal crossing time? I've heard you can change it and start animal crossing and when you click your profile and Isabelle shows up you cqn have her change the date before starting and the town is unchanged because it didn't save the time change. But I'd like to know from someonr who has actually tried this. Does it really work like that?
